Why Race?
Racing allows all sailors to hone their skills and become better sailors. While there is a competitive aspect that can be very exciting, club racing on DuBay is fun, social, and is the best way to learn to make your boat do and go where you want. Have no reservations, Join us!
Racing
Lake DuBay introduced a one-design Butterfly fleet in 2009. Club racing also consists of a handicapped fleet using the Portsmouth rating system. The boats generally racing are scows of all types, day sailors, and daggerboard boats. This system allows anyone to participate in club racing and to be competitive.
Events
Racing takes place on Tuesday evenings (Portsmouth), Wednesday evenings (Butterfly) and Saturdays (Portsmouth) as listed on the club calendar.
Tuesday and Wednesday evening races will be short races, generally lasting around 20 to 30 minutes each. Three races are generally sailed.
Saturday races will be a bit longer in length. This allows the cruising boats, spinnaker equipped boats, and catamarans to "stretch their legs" a bit. Two or three races will generally be sailed with races lasting around 45 minutes each.
Race day fees are $5.00 for club members, $10.00 for non-members.
Race courses are windward-leeward with the start line either at the leeward end or in the middle of the course.
Results
Results for the current year will be posted on this page as soon as they are available.
LDBSA encourages sailors to participate in regattas. Photos, results, and any written information submitted to the club will be posted on this page.

The lake looked pretty darn angry as the boats took to the water for the last Tuesday evening race. The 3 foot waves quickly decreased to great, flat water and winds 5 to 10. Dennis and Kurt started out fast in Rich's I-20, but mechanical problems forced them to retire after the first race.

Talk about light air! LDBSA sailors raced in it anyway. Winds about 2 with gusts to 4 made for some tricky sailing and for plenty of time for joking around on the water. It was a beautiful summer day spent with great friends and lots of dock talk back in the boatyard.

LDBSA sailors experienced another evening of nearly perfect winds. There were only four boats on the line, but those four had some fantastic sailing in reasonably steady and diminishing evening winds. Thanks Dennis Gamble and Jim Force for setting an awesome course for a full evening of sailing.

10 boats competed in a medium to light air series. The weather was beautiful and the competition was great. Special thanks to Mike Koss and Chuck Jagodinski for handling RC duties.

The first Saturday race for the season was raced in extremely light air. Primarily thermal activity, the sailors maintained patience and some luck to keep the boats moving. The absence of power boat traffic made racing in these light conditions possible.

The first evening of racing kicked off the 2009 season with 8 boats on the starting line!
Jack and Sheryl Thilke handled RC duties and set a good course in the varying wind conditions. The wind persistantly shifted right and the boats keeping to the right side of the fleet made ground on the rest of the competitors.
Race 1 was great fun as the boats started very competatively and everyone knocked the winter rust out. Mel Smith had boatspeed in his J-16 scow along with Stewart Doty and Jim Force sailing a Lightning.
Things got interesting in race 2 when Calen capsized as well as Kurt and Melissa Sims. The Sims got their new Melges 17 back on it's feet quickly. Calen worked hard, but needed some extra help. Calen's dad, Joe was about mid leg heading downwind when Calen gave a wave indicating he needed help. Joe and Dennis headed back up the course to assist in righting the boat and in doing so, were awarded their evening average for the second race.
With the winds up a bit and gusting, Mark Ennis and Stewart and Jim headed in to avoid taking a swim. The rest of the fleet started the final race - a windward 2 1/2. The persistant shift made the course largely starboard tack favored upwind and port tack favored downwind, but the racing was still tight. In this last race, Kurt Sims had his M-17 moving well and crossed the line first. Tearing up the course overall, were Dennis Gamble and Joe Terry, with excellent boat speed in their Butterfly sailboats.
Mel Smith was late to the start of the last race, thinking the racing was done and seeing two other boats heading in after the RC boat pulled anchor to assist in the capsize recovery during the second race. Mel sailed determined and did very well, dispite the final time.
