The Lake DuBay Sailing Assocition was well represented at the 2009 I-20 Spring Regatta. The regatta was held at Cedar Lake, Indiana and hosted by the Cedar Lake Yacht Clu on May 16 & 17, 2009.

The hospitality was wonderful as CLYC members welcomed sailors on Friday afternoon and in cooperation with the I-20 National Class Association, sponsored a Friday evening dinner for all the sailors and volunteers.

The winds were blowing nicely Saturday morning for the first race. Winds around 15 with gusts to 20 meant for challenging conditions to knock the winter rust off. Add in the 15 degree shifts that were experienced and it became very challenging. Sailors had to be on their toes to both keep the boats upright and stay competative within the fleet.

Sailors from Lake DuBay included Calen Terry, who crewed for Andy Gratton, Rich Barker teaming up with Kurt Sims, and Joe and LaCinda Terry.

This was Calen's second I-20 regatta as he participated in the Junior event on Lake Mendota in 2006, but he hasn't crewed in racing conditions on an I-20 before and certainly not in these wind conditions. Calen sailed very well, and helped his skipper achieve a 5th place overall finish. Their highest finishing place was 3rd, and the finish of the 1st race with 3rd, 4th, and 5th finishing at the same time made for some very exciting sailing for the Gratton/Terry team.

Rich and Kurt sailed together for the first time at an I-20 regatta. Rich is no stranger to the regatta scene and he and Kurt put together some good sailing. When the conditions got tough for the 2nd race on Saturday, many of the sailors elected to stay ashore. Rich and Kurt sailed tough, and that determination showed wtih a top half finish.

Joe and LaCinda have proven that doing well means sailing consistantly. They finished up towards the top and sailed four solid races resulting in a very unusual three-way tie for 1st place against some great competition. The Terry's also had the highest top-speed recorded by transponders located in the boats of 17 mph. The transpondors were sponsored by Brook Patten, creater of VisualSail, a 3-D race replay software that is incredibly useful for reviewing the race and learning by visual replays. This system should be considered by any sailing club to help their sailors advance their sailing abilities.

In the end, the regatta offered trophies to the skipper and crew of the top five boats. Three LDBSA sailors took home trophies. Well done.
